Orthodox are so into apophatic! I’ll always have a lot of the East in me. One of the things I loathed about Calvinism is that they seem to have God in a box. In outline form. And, of course, they are always right, on the smallest details of those outlines.

One of the most important lessons in my journey of knowing God is that God is unknown—far more unknown than he is known. Like the Socratic wisdom that we have no wisdom (the one thing I know is that I know nothing), to begin to know God, or to know him anew in and after my crisis of faith, I had to recognize that I didn’t know him, and my growing knowledge of him is grounded in awareness of how little I know him. And while my practical experience with Calvinism is small compared with yours, certainly what you say resonates with my experience!

So good to hear you say these things.

"So-crates: 'The only true wisdom consists in knowing that you know nothing.'"

"That's us, dude!"

Sorry, I know your post is serious, but I couldn't help myself. That was one of the movies that I was raised on and it does have a Catholic saint in it.

In all seriousness though, the #1 thing that I hope you write someday (no pressure) is your spiritual journey to the Catholic faith. I just love reading conversion stories. I realize that's a daunting challenge that would probably take up a book, but hey, if Scott Hahn can do it, so can you. (By the way, I never read Scott Hahn's book but I hear it's really good.)

My post is not that serious, Christopher, and it’s an excellent movie!

I’m very familiar with Scott’s conversion story! I’ve never read the book but I’ve heard the relevant tapes (both his and Kimberly’s) often enough to be able to quote them. From what I’ve seen, some of Scott’s books are pretty directly adapted from his talks and my impression is that Rome, Sweet Home is one of them.

I might have a post coming up for you with some of what you’re looking for, although I’m not planning to write anything new about it anytime soon.
