Based on your article, I figured you drew the picture in the 1990s. The panels looked like something from a sci-fi movie. The biggest clue you gave me is that I shouldn't have any trouble figuring out the film. It finally clicked: my guess is The Phantom Menace. Panel #1 is Darth Maul. Panel #2 is the lightsaber duel. Panel #3 is the Gungans standing with their shields in battle (maybe?). Panel #4 is Queen Amidala's ship. I don't know about panel #5. I don't know what panel #6 is either except that it looks like some kind of white being and it reminds me of the aliens from Cocoon. That was the panel that tripped me up the most. Who would that be in The Phantom Menace? Ok, I'm now bracing myself for you telling me yes or no.😓

Excellent detective work, Christopher! You are correct on all counts, including the time frame.

Panel 1 was the one I thought would tip you off, quickly confirmed by panel 2. Panel 3 I had forgotten myself, but you got it! As for panel 5, I fear it could be anything. Droids? Droid transporters? The Naboo capital city? Coruscant? No idea!

As for panel 6: It seems like you recognize that it’s a white face. Looking at an image of the Cocoon aliens, though, I’m guessing that you may be very slightly misinterpreting the image: The eyes aren’t the two large red dots, but the two smaller streaks above them that you might be scanning as eyebrows. The two red dots below the eyes should be smaller, but the markers I was working with had limited precision on paper with some bleed in it. Can you get it now? :-)

To quote Anakin Skywalker from The Phantom Menace: "Yippee!" Thanks for giving me another chance and sparing me the embarrassment of not being able to identify a Star Wars movie.

Because it's bluish, my idea for panel #5 was Naboo's water core. (Why not?) As for panel #6, I figured out that it's Queen Amidala as we first see her in that famous kabuki-style make-up. I remember now that she was the only person in the film with a white face.

Ok, I officially give up (almost half a year later): despite science fiction being my favorite genre, I cannot figure out what movie you are referencing in the storyboard of your picture. I just know I'm going to be like, "Oh! Of course!" when you reveal it. If it's a movie that I had thought of, I'm going to kick myself for being so timid and not saying anything.

Christopher, I’ve added a new footnote to the piece that I think you may find helpful. Let me know!

When you say "guess the movie," do you mean what movie The Professor is "directing" or the movie that someone who looks like him was in? Since he reminds me of Albert Einstein, I'm guessing the film I.Q.

And yes, the Professor is obviously meant to be reminiscent of Einstein! The editors asked me for a white-haired professorial type, and I had done Einstein caricatures before, so it was a natural fit. (This particular ESL series was targeted to young Asian women, and apparently white-haired professorial types polled well with the target demographic, or something.)

Haha, I like that answer Christopher! But what I meant (and have now made the caption more explicit to clarify) is what movie I attempted to represent in the dim images in the Professor’s storyboards!
