In the OT Jubilee, weren’t lands supposed to be returned to their original owners, so that no tribe would lose its ancestral heritage? I understand that was often honored in the breach, but God’s law was solid and beautiful, and would have prevented much poverty. Do you love Michael Card’s Jubilee song? I do.
Thank you for this lovely piece. I can’t remember a year when I was more in need of hope, at least not in the last quarter century. ❤️
I added a line to the final version of the homily in the video inspired by your remark about being in need of hope. The idea that land could not be permanently sold, as human beings could not be permanently bought, suggests the radical idea that the idea of “property” is relative: The Earth, like every human person, belongs to God, and since God intends all the world’s goods for the benefit of all the world’s people (universal destination of goods), no one has an absolute right to a tract of land. I’ve had Michael Card’s song in my head all weekend!
Jack and I took Gram to a Michael Card concert at the “new” convention center in Wildwood. He had his band with him, and started with “Jubilee.” It was marvelous! Even Gram enjoyed it!!
